Educational Biography

I am a nurse with a background in psychiatric and mental health nursing with a focus on children, adolescents and families. My research, publications, teaching, and service efforts are centered around these phenomena and populations.

I have extensive experience working across cultures within the United States and on six continents. The work is focused on health care, including mental health, substance use, and abuse, and workforce-related issues. My career also includes teaching and collaborating with doctoral students in nursing and other disciplines for more than four decades. My work with universities in selected international communities has enhanced my level of knowledge and appreciation of the contributions that nurses make to science and service. Much of my work has included an interdisciplinary approach at all levels, including teaching, research, and service. My activities on local, state, and national boards is extensive and intensive. Here is an example: At the national level, I have served on the Advisory Boards of the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Rural Health, and Mental Health America.

Professional Biography

My professional bio includes a BS Degree in Nursing from a Historically Black University, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Florida, an MS Degree from Saint Xavier University, Chicago, an EdD from the University of Florida, and a fellowship in academic administration at Georgetown University's President's office, Washington, DC. I was also awarded the W. K. Kellogg Fellowship in Leadership and was exposed to policy issues that address well-being from a global perspective. I have had a joint appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Florida (25 years), and Case Western Reserve University (18 years), which helps to re-enforce interdisciplinary learning and caregiving in a variety of settings. My professional work is heavily embedded in collaborative research, teaching, and service, which also includes working with community-based stakeholders. Finally, I am the founding director of the Provost Scholars Program, a collaborative effort between the University and two school districts in the Greater Cleveland area. Collectively, my experience could help to advance the mission of our organization, and help to create new pathways for collaboration that could help to improve the nation's and world's health through research, education, policy, and practice.
