Professional Biography

Dr. Heidi Shank has been a nurse for 38 years. Thirty-one of those years were spent working at the bedside and in various leadership roles. In 2013, she shifted into an academic full-time faculty role and served as the BSN Program Director at the University of Toledo for a few years. She was the Founding DNP Program Director at Lourdes University from 2017-2021. She is currently an Assistant Professor and the DNP Program Director at the University of Toledo.

Dr. Shank is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), The National League of Nursing (NLN), the International Network for Doctoral Education (INDEN), and a Board Member for the Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Association of Critical-care Nurses (AACN). She is the current President-elect for the Zeta Theta Chapter at Large of Sigma. Her research focus is Critical Care, Nursing Leadership & Law, Workplace Violence, and The Use of Plain Language in Healthcare to Promote Social Justice and Equality. She has published regularly, served on several national panels, and taught nursing internationally in Managua and Leon, Nicaragua, and most recently in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dr. Shank recognizes the strong value of service within the nursing community. She has developed several CE presentations on Nursing Law throughout her career, and it has been her mission to deliver this education gratis to all Ohio nurses and nursing students.
