Dr. Andrea Bostrom is a professor emerita from Kirkhof College of Nursing (KCON) at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She worked at KCON from 1989 to 2021. She is certified through the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) as an adult psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and taught mental health nursing to undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Bostrom received her BSN from the University of Michigan, MA in counseling from Western Michigan University, and did her coursework in advanced practice psychiatric nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago prior to entering the doctoral program, where she received her PhD. Her dissertation, A Factor Analytic Study of the Items of the Dyskinesia Identification System—Coldwater, focused on the assessment of tardive dyskinesia. Her research and practice interests have since focused on the chronically and persistently mentally ill, their treatment with psychotropic medications, and their life in the community. She participated in the Kellogg Foundation-funded Michigan Academic Consortium for Nurse Managed Centers (2001-2007) and coordinated the collection of evaluation data for that project at Grand Valley’s nurse-managed primary care clinics. She was named a Grand Valley State University Presidential Service-Learning Scholar in 1999-2000 for her work to establish the first of these clinics as a screening clinic in a subsidized housing apartment. She received the Grand Valley State University Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award in 2021. She is a member of Sigma, Sigma Xi, International Network of Doctoral Education in Nursing, American Nurses Association in Michigan, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses.
